It was in March 2003 I filmed and photographed my first charity ride for Women for Women and Robert Winston ; filming and photographing… being witness to thousands of you taking your own challenge; in far flung corners of the world like Cuba, Egypt, through the heat of India and the desert sands of Jordan - helping raise millions to fund the charities training and for research into the causes and treatments of conditions that affect women and their babies including; Cancer, Miscarriage, Genetic diseases, Stillbirth, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Pre-eclampsia, Infertility, Obstetric cholestasis and Brain injury.
Ever since and after every event I’ve been left humbled, mystified and in awe of everyone who participated.
What I’ve witnessed has at times brought me very close to tears – happy tears I hasten to add; those who know me well enough will be acutely aware that I don’t cry – perhaps that is somethingthat may need some serious therapy one day. But that’s a different, and a very long story!
Another admission I’ll share with you - It seems I've opened the admission page in my memory bank doesn’t it – in my own way I’ve quite possibly fallen in love with every one of you that’s ever taken one of these challenges, and you know why?
Because I’ve seen first hand the commitment you have given - not just to riding through a hot and dusty and sometimes bewildering country you are unused too – whilst having every sweaty moment filmed and photographed by me, but also, before all of that effort and exertion; having spent many months at home trying to figure out how to raise the much needed money that goes to fund the wonderful research that’s carried out daily at the Institute – and then gone and raised it!!.
I take my hat off to every single one of you, I bow before you all!!
What an admission for a MAN to make – but there, I have now and it’s here for you all to see! Oh! Boy! I had better go and do something manly and get myself back on track!!
I hope you enjoy reading MANY FACES and that it may inspire you to take on another challenge at some time in the future.
